We are the Michigan affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, which is the premiere organization working to protect the Bill of Rights and advance its principles.  The ACLU of Michigan (ACLU-MI) is unique in that we are the only organization in the state pushing for systemic change and fighting for civil liberties and civil rights in the courts, at the legislature and in the streets.   We constitute over 15,000 members statewide, a main office in Detroit, a legislative office in Lansing and nine grassroots branches across the state, a legal, legislative, and communications department, and an LGBT, a Racial Justice, and other special projects.

The ACLU of Michigan initiated its LGBT Project (Project) in 2000 to focus exclusively on issues concerning sexual orientation and gender identity/expression in this state, and is one of just three state affiliates that have a project devoted specifically to LGBT issues.   The Project is the only legal program in Michigan that fights for the rights of LGBT people and their families.   The Project brings impact lawsuits in state and federal courts designed to have a significant effect on the lives of LGBT people.  Our legal strategies are built on the idea that fighting for civil rights means not just persuading judges, but ultimately changing society for the better. As we litigate for change, we implement outreach campaigns and provide advocacy tools to help people take action in their community.
